a contraption which locks onto a nut or bolt head and stays in position while I go around the other side and lefty loosey or righty tighty said nut/bolt?
In before ‘a friend’, whatever one of those is.

?
Assuming your current situation has a bolt you can’t reach from both sides, and there’s nothing to prop it against, like in the middle of a wall. If that’s the case, then a longer wrench or bar might work. I don’t know of anything else though.

Not sure what you mean. Like something to hold a socket on the bolt while you position yourself to get better leverage? If so,get a plastic bag and stuff a bit of it inside the socket, then jam it on the bolt head. The extra material will help the socket grip better.

The best thing other than a box-end wrench propped against something is a Vise-Grips. Heresy for anybody who minds marring the bolt head, but it works in situations where the wrench angle would be wrong or might get forced off.

Nah, the nuts are on the underside of the transmission tunnel so can only be accessed from underneath, and the bolts can only be accessed from inside the cabin. If I jam a spanner in there it just comes out on the second turn.. Thanks for trying though!

Won’t fit I’m afraid. Im removing the gun rack from the Defender and the bolt heads are recessed into where the butt of the rifle sits. I think I might take out the middle section between the seats and access that way. I was hoping someone somewhere had made something excellent for loners like me. Oh well.

Socket and a breaker bar? I’m sure you could rig something up to hold it.

No it was to hold a bolt firmly (in a place where I can’t reach simultaneously) so that it can’t spin while I’m trying to untighten it.

I may have to resort to ingenuity. Should probably have a cup of tea first to ready myself

I’ve stuck a socket on a torque handle and used it to back up a bolt before - sometimes a torque handle or breaker bar takes up less space than a ratchet handle would.

Grab a spanner, tie some string around the other end in a big loop, keep tension on the string in a direction which holds the spanner in place - twisting the loop may help.
Alternatively, duct-tape the spanner in place, somewhere it’s also wedged.

Will that stick galvanised steel to aluminium with no side effects?

There’s only one way to find out!

It’s more that there’s fairly poor access for a spanner on one side. No matter, something obviously doesn’t exist so now I have to: 1) invent it, and 2) cut an access hole. Thank you though.

DON’T WELD ON GALVANIZED STEEL WITHOUT GRINDING THE GALVANIZING BACK!
Sorry for the yelling, but it is that important. You can poison yourself with the zinc fumes if you weld galvanized metal without grinding off the galvanizing first.

Oh but the welding steel to aluminium bit is OK right? No worries, I’ve got some paper masks in here somewhere anyway...

They won’t actually weld together as the aluminum melting point is lower. But if the bolt/nut is steel, maybe you can weld something to it that wedges it in place so you don’t have to put a tool on it.

I was joking

Ah, in that case, grab the spinning part with some vise grips. If you can’t access whatever it is, cut an access hole and have it welded over after it’s fixed.

That was terrifying to watch as a child.

Get an impact wrench? then you wont need to hold the other side.
